History of FBCO

The First Baptist Church of Ojai is a neighborhood church in the heart of the eclectic town of Ojai, surrounded by the scenic Topa Topa Mountains of the Ojai valley. We are boldly and humbly committed to the gospel message of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection.

FBCO began in 1909 as the First Baptist Church of Nordhoff, located at Ventura and Matilija streets. Eight years later a forest fire claimed the building. The pastor, W.E. Smith, donated his salary to the building fund and took a second job to pay his expenses. A new church building was dedicated in 1918. Over the years FBCO has had a handful of homes. Eventually the church found their way to their current gathering spot in 1958. Throughout her long history, FBCO has sought to bring the light of the gospel into the Ojai valley. In the midst of a diverse community of spiritualities and religions, the people of FBCO are an imperfect people, unashamedly clinging to a perfect Savior.
